In 1920, Ernest
Moore Viquesney copyrighted “The Spirit of the American
Doughboy”, honoring the WWI American Infantryman.
Viaquesney won a national design award for this work in 1921
which created a demand for
small replicas.
The original life size statue had already been installed in
locations throughout America.
These historic
“statuettes”, made during the 1930’s, nearly vanished after the period of WWII
in the 1950’s and early 1960’s.
In 2002, sculptor Frank Colson, acquired an antique reproduction of this
statuette as a result of having cast a life-size “Doughboy” for the
City of Sarasota,
Florida in 1998.
Mr. Colson has reproduced, in bronze, this small figure in exacting detail,
right down to the Springfield rifle with mounted bayonet.
It also includes the name “E.M.Viquesney” imprinted on the bronze base
along with an edition #. For the
first time since 1926, this work is available in a limited edition of only 150.
Mounted on a black
marble base, this original Spirit of the American Doughboy stands
16” high, x 7” x 6” with a polished antique bronze patina.
Collectors may acquire this memorable work at this first offering prior to
submission to major auction houses at the discounted price.
